Integrated Cost As an Independent Variable® (I-CAIV®) is a process and automated decision support tool for assessment of alternatives providing the ability to quantify, compare, and trade off critical decision factors such as technical performance, cost, risk, schedule, etc.
FTI’s I-CAIV® tool provides senior decision-makers with a capability to make informed decisions regarding the acquisition and modernization of systems, technology investment strategies, and alternative architectures, systems, and technologies.
I-CAIV® is a PC-based tool with the capability of data sharing and collaboration via a LAN. It facilitates the decision process through a dynamic evaluation decision space with user-defined assessment dimensions such as utility, cost, risk, and schedule. I-CAIV® provides an automated and comprehensive assessment environment which is traceable to user requirements.
I-CAIV® Overview
FTI’s I-CAIV® process and decision support tool address the challenges of alternative assessment through the application of sound decision making principles combined with proven assessment methods such as the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Quality Functional Deployment (QFD). The integration of automated decision criteria prioritization and alternative value quantification, participant input rationale capture and archival, and ability to perform excursion (“what if”) analysis provides an assessment framework that facilitates comprehensive alternative assessments.
I-CAIV® is an automated tool that provides the ability to quantify, assess, and compare the merits of various alternatives (architectures, systems, courses of action, etc.) in multiple, user-defined Dimensions such as utility, performance, cost, risk, schedule impact, etc.:
- Designed to support decision making within a DoD culture and tailorable to the product life cycle—from early Lab assessments to justification of weapon system sustainment priorities
- Produces quantification of utility, risk, or other user-selected factors based on the alternative’s performance against prioritized decision criteria or measures
- Quantification calculations are:
- Traceable back to end user requirements and needs
- Traceable to quantitative analysis results as calculated by the tool and archived there
- Decomposable to provide insight into how the values were derived
- Data display and report generation capabilities combine alternative results in each Dimension to present and interactive multi-dimensional decision space
- Tier Run capability allows parameter variations to facility “what if” and “sensitivity” analysis
